Each mode has its dignity, and each becomes distorted when forced to do the work of the others.
This is why the guardrails around scientific language can feel so strict. They are not there to suppress imagination or to deny the value of metaphor. They exist to prevent a meaningful image from being mistaken for a verified claim. A symbol may be profoundly true in the way it organizes experience, even if it is not true in the way a measurement is true. A vision may be psychologically or spiritually illuminating without being empirically established. When these differences are ignored, the result is confusion. When they are honored, imagination and rigor can collaborate instead of compete.
Mathematics sits at an especially important threshold in this relationship. It is human-made in its language and formal structure, yet extraordinarily powerful in describing patterns that appear in the world. That power can tempt us to treat mathematical elegance as proof of ontological necessity. But elegance alone is not evidence. The same mathematical form may serve as a useful model, a symbolic mirror, or a literal description, depending on context. Wisdom begins when we ask not only whether something is mathematically beautiful, but what kind of truth it is expressing.
A mature culture does not need to choose between poetry and precision. It needs the ability to move between them consciously. Poetic truth deepens experience. Symbolic truth organizes meaning. Empirical truth disciplines assertion. When these are kept distinct, each becomes stronger. The human task is not to eliminate mythopoetic seeing in the name of rigor, nor to abandon rigor in the name of vision. It is to let each mode speak honestly from its own level, so that meaning remains alive and claims remain trustworthy.
